Election Reflections

posted Wednesday, 5 November 2008

Good Afternoon, Blogland.

I want to share my experiences of November 4, 2008.  My son's school was closed on this day, so we had decided ahead of time that I would take him with me to the polls.  I wanted him to really understand the process.  We started on our trek at 530 AM because we didn't want to be in line all day.  Having seen the lines from early voting, I was afraid that it would be an all day process.  Anticipating this, I took the day as a vacation day.  I was both anxious and excited; like a kid on Christmas Eve.  The air was electric outside of my polling place, people were sharing chairs and blankets in the crisp morning air, fast friends were made as we stood in line awaiting the "starting bell".  The process flowed rather smoothly, so smoothly that "Step Aside" ran through my head.

God is willing and He is able
This did not catch Him by surprise
So just trust Him
And just oh step aside
Be still and don't question it
These obstacles they were allowed
He wants to take you higher and higher
If you will hold on
God is willing and more than able
This did not catch Him by surprise
So just trust Him
And just step aside

God has seen what we, a race of His people, and more importantly we a NATION of His people have gone through.  But I believe it was so that we have no doubt who is in control.  These obstacles were allowed.  Nothing can happen without his authorization.  I just had to trust and believe that His will would be done.  I made plans to go to Sip in the Buckhead area of Atlanta with my 13 year old son to watch the results roll in.  I chose to take him because I wanted him to understand the importance of this election. We went to SIP, a diverse coffeehouse where the people are as blended as the vast arrays of coffees and teas served there. The crowd was truly representative of the America I love; the America I served in the Navy to protect.  As we watched the results roll in, there were hugs, tears, smiles and hi-fives exchanged.  Strangers became instant friends.  Hazel, Monica, Leslie, John and I were among  the  friendships that developed as the night wore on.  It became evident that nothing could stop what God had put together.  God reminds us of this in Psalm 119:173 May your hand be ready to help me, for I have chosen your precepts.

Our country is going in a new direction. We are ready to take our country back, to get our families back in order, our finances back on track, and to get back the values that our forefathers meant when they sat down and put the quill to paper:

We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.

Words can't  adequately express what I feel, so I put together a video collage of pictures collected through these months culminating with pictures from around the country last night .  Enjoy the pictures as Hero by Mariah Carey and Step Aside by Yolanda Adams play in the background.  We must realize that when we step aside, God will raise up the most unlikely hero to bring us together.  Enjoy it, forward it, share it.  You can find it on YouTube.  Here is the link for you to email out:

This is the America that I am proud to be a part of, and God Bless America and protect President-elect Barack Obama, his family and his political cabinet.

The whole thing seems like a fairy tale, but it was just preordained. Apparently in 1968, a president stated that America would be ready for a black president in 40 years....looky hear it done came true. : )

:) yep..if you just looky here...it sholl has. I have cried so much in the last few days. I cried for my Grandma, who didn't live to see this day...I cried for my grandfather...who was subjected to the oppression, I cried for my children because they can see it truly is possible to be ANYTHING. It is easy to tell them that, but until they SEE someone in the position that looks like them, it is hard to visualize. Thanks for coming by.

I was touched and I am not one to cry much but I cried when Obama became President! I am especially excited for our men who really needed this victory more than any other group in this society. I am glad for them because now the have a real chance at the piece of pie that America has to offer.

thanks for coming by. I am happy for our men too. Because not since the civil rights era had they had a real leader that could give them the audacity to hope.

I can't tell you how proud I am to be a woman of color right now...this gives us all new faith that if you can dream it you can achieve it! I think every black person out there has a little extra pep in their step over the past couple days. We can now walk and hold our heads high and know that not everyone see us as the outcast in this country. it took white people and black people, hispanics etc all to pull together and elect this man ... Barack Obama ... the first man of color our president of the United States!

My and the Hubby went and voted together, his first time. I'm glad that we were able to experience this together. Had it been during the last election, it wouldn't have had the same impact on me. I was so glad that with the exception of my littlest ones, my kids are old enough to understand the importance of this election.

Our tv's have been fixed on the news channels for the past 6 months or so and it's funny because it began to rub off on the 17 yr old. I would come in the room and see him watching different news programs instead of the normal shows he would watch. It's great because I feel like AS A FAMILY we were able to truly be a part of this past election and for it to turn out the way it did.....it's just amazing.

I'm still in disbelief and overjoyed. Cant wait for January. I wish there was a way we could make it to Washington cause we'd all be there in a heart beat.
